27th King’s Art Prize Winner

Congratulations Steve Lopes – Orange Venus – Winner of the 27th King’s Art Prize.

This prize-winning work in the form of oil on canvas relates to Steve Lopes connection with the Central Western town of Orange in NSW. The figures, set at Lake Canobolas, depict the artist’s affinity for the area, evoking a spiritual sense of interaction between the figures and environment. The artist’s experience of witnessing the Transit of Venus in Orange years ago inspired his celestial motifs, capturing a magical and serene narrative.

Steve Lopes graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts) UNSW and in the same year studied with the New York Art Students League in the United States. Lopes has had over 20 solo exhibitions across Australia and the United Kingdom and also exhibited in group exhibitions including Not the Way Home an exhibition of 13 prominent Australian artists and the Salon de Refuses, both in Sydney and touring in 2012. He is a frequent finalist and in 1997 was awarded the Young Artist Award at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, London, England.
