Spotlight On: Rinky Hijikata

Having joined The King’s School as a Year 7 student in 2013, Rinky quickly shone as an astute student along with his obvious tennis prowess.

During his time at the School Rinky embraced all aspects of a King’s education, involving himself across all three pillars of Academic Excellence, Character Development and Christian Community.

“I learned a lot when I was at King’s, first and foremost how to be a Kingsman and the important values that come with that, being respectful, hard-working, and how to be a part of a team”, says Rinky.

His tennis skill was quickly noticed with Rinky representing King’s in the 1sts Tennis team within his first semester at the School and going on to receive Tennis Honour Colours.

He says, “Playing against much older, stronger, and probably better opponents was a great learning curve for me, I wasn’t always winning when I came in (to the 1sts) and had to learn how to be a good loser and go back and work hard to keep improving”.

“Year to year I could see the improvements and just having fun with my team, it’s a lot more enjoyable when you are part of something bigger than yourself. That’s the way it was when I was at King’s and we were able to win a few premierships when I was there, which were a lot of fun and something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Despite his sporting commitments Rinky remained dedicated to his academics and was a valuable member of Burkitt House while also involving himself in the School’s Boys to Men Program, Community Outreach program as well as the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.

Rinky said that the staff and community at King’s helped ensure he stayed on track with his schooling and life away from tennis.

“I had a lot of great role models around me and they taught me how to be a great person and work for your goals. There was plenty of opportunities at King’s to get out and amongst it and put yourself in uncomfortable situations and I think that’s the best way to learn,” says Rinky.

After school, Rinky attended the University of North Carolina where he starred as part of their tennis team and was selected as an All-American for singles in the 2020-21 season.

In 2021 he helped the University of North Carolina win the ITA National Indoor Championship and reach the outdoor NCAA Championship round of 16.

In 2022 Rinky made his professional debut, with his Grand Slam debut that summer at the US Open as a wildcard entry. The following year he teamed up with fellow Australian Jason Kubler to win the 2023 Australian Open doubles title.

The King’s School looks forward to cheering on Rinky at the Paris Olympics along with fellow Old Boy Josh Green (’18) and all the athletes selected to represent Australia.
