STEAM Week – Astronomy

In recognition of National Science Week, The King’s School has embraced its own Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Week.

Science education is crucial for developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and curiosity. It prepares students for future careers, promotes scientific literacy, and empowers them to tackle global challenges. By fostering a deeper understanding of the world, science education equips students to contribute meaningfully to society and inspires a lifelong passion for learning.

The Space Odyssey Team, affectionately known as SPOT, is Tara’s inter-school Astronomy Club, and the following aspects of the importance of Science in STEAM are highlighted in multiple ways.

  • Enhances Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills: Through activities like astrophotography and spectroscopic analysis in SPOT, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They learn to analyse celestial phenomena, devise methods to capture images, and solve technical challenges, which are vital in science.
  • Promotes Creativity and Innovation: SPOT encourages students to creatively approach astronomy, blending scientific precision with artistic expression through photography. This fusion of science and creativity nurtures innovation, allowing students to explore space in unique ways.
  • Encourages Collaboration and Teamwork: SPOT’s group activities, including joint observation sessions and collaborative projects, mirror the teamwork essential in scientific research. Students learn to work together, share insights, and contribute to collective discoveries.
  • Increases Engagement and Curiosity: The hands-on nature of SPOT’s activities, like photographing the Moon and stars, deeply engages students and fuels their curiosity about the universe. This active involvement fosters a love for science and motivates further exploration.
  • Fosters a Lifelong Love of Learning: SPOT’s engaging and exploratory approach to astronomy instils a lifelong passion for science. The excitement of discovering and understanding the universe inspires students to continue learning and exploring long after the sessions end.

The club runs in two groups (Junior and Senior) and is composed of students from The King’s School, Tara Anglican School for Girls, and Pacific Hills Christian School. Each group meets on alternative Thursdays in Terms 2 and 3 from 6-8pm at Tara, partaking in celestial Astrophotography with cameras and telescopes. Students have the option of using their iPhones, or the disposable cameras that are provided. More advanced students, however, tend to utilise webcams and Astrophotography software, including WaveSharp and SharpCap. Sessions can often be seen taking photos, videos, timelapses, or spectroscopic photographs of the Moon, nearby stars, and other celestial bodies within our Solar System. The club is an engaging activity that is open to everyone, and anyone with an interest in space is welcome, catering to all skill and knowledge levels.

Through STEAM power, the Space Odyssey Team was not only able to enlighten students and provide great insight into the inner workings of the universe, but it also inspires the next generation of great astrophysicists and NASA engineers.

To celebrate STEAM Week, The King’s School is holding a STEAM Showcase at 5.45pm on Wednesday 14 August at The Science Centre.
